Cross Country skiers compete in Drayton Valley

Nine skiers from the Rocky Mountain House Cross Country Ski Club travelled to Drayton Valley this weekend to take part in Alberta Cup ski races on March 5 and 6. It’s the first time our club has participated at these races in many years (at least seven, but could be more).
Representing Rocky Mountain House were U12 skiers: Isabelle Barr, Sylvia Button-Stuber, Grace Halladay, Anna Marchbank and Theron Simpson; U10 skiers: Caroline Button-Stuber and Emmaline Marchbank; and U8 skiers: Sophie Barr and Shepherd Halladay.
All skiers are registered in the Jackrabbit and Track Attack skills development program with the Rocky Mountain House Cross Country Ski Club.
It was the first Alberta Cup event for all of these skiers. On Saturday, skiers completed the classic technique sprint event, covering a short distance in three or four heats. Anna Marchbank earned herself a bronze medal in the U12 category for skiers born in 2011.
On Sunday, skiers participated in the freestyle event which covered different distances based on age category. Our skiers performed very well for their first races, demonstrating good technique and wonderful team spirit and sportsmanship.
After the races wrapped up, Rocky skiers and their families took advantage of the beautiful day to enjoy a leisure ski on the Pembina Nordic Ski Club trails.
