Monica Schmutz
April 8, 1958 – Sept. 28, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Monica (Mickey) Schmutz, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, who left us on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at the age of 66. She is survived by her devoted husband, Peter, and their cherished children: Michael (Katie), David (Amber), Niklaus (Lyndsay) and Katie (Adam); eleven grandchildren and sister Nïsse.

Mickey’s strong will and generous spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.

Born on April 8, 1958, Mickey was the daughter of Paula Eaton. Together, they embarked on adventures that took them from Vancouver to the Bahamas for several of Mickey’s childhood years. After Paula married Mickey’s adoptive father, John Gustafson in 1966, the family settled in Michigan, and Mickey’s baby sister Nïsse was born four years later.

In 1971, Paula and her two girls moved to Yarrow, B.C., where Mickey’s love for farming grew. These interests ultimately led her to Olds College of Agriculture after high school. There, she met the love of her life, Peter Schmutz, a hardworking young Swiss man. They married in November 1978 and started their life together on a farm in Donalda, Alta. They had their first son and purchased a dairy farm near Camrose, where they welcomed three more children.

In 1991, the family moved to their farm north of Rocky Mountain House and shifted their focus from the dairy to a wood business. Though they continued to farm, it moved to the background. Balancing a business, family and farm life, Mickey was always supportive and nurturing. She showed her children the values of hard work and compassion and was always available to give helpful advice and a big hug. She took great joy in family gatherings, the Frisco community, and her passion for raising chickens.

Mickey’s legacy is one of practicality and kindness. She will be deeply missed, and her strength will continue to inspire all who knew her.
