George “Gary” Thompson
1944 – 2023

George Gary Thompson passed away peacefully on Dec. 4, 2023, at the Bethany Care Centre in Sylvan Lake, Alta.

He was born Feb. 16, 1944, in Moose Jaw, Sask. As a young teenager, his family relocated to Calgary, Alta., where he eventually met his wife Norma in 1967 and they married in 1968.

In 1972, Gary graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education. He began his career at David Thompson Junior Senior High School where he and his family lived in the teacherages with others who were also beginning their careers. Gary, Norma and their two young boys soon settled on an acreage just east of Condor, Alta.

During his 31-year teaching career, he taught English at David Thompson High School and Will Sinclair High School in Rocky Mountain House. During this time, he had a long-lasting impact on his students and helped shape the minds of many youths.

After retiring, Gary continued to contribute to education in central Alberta by being elected to the position of Wild Rose School Board trustee in 2008, where he served for three terms.

Gary is predeceased by his father Art, mother Gladys, and sister Marilynne. He leaves behind his wife, Norma, and their two sons Jeff (Debbie) and Doug (Joanna); his four grandchildren: Chase, Tyler, Jazzlyn and Paige; and his sisters: Sandy and Sheril and their families.

A celebration of life will be held at the Condor Community Hall on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023. We welcome friends and family to drop in and visit between 1 and 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Canadian Cancer Society.
