Sara “Val” Fontaine
July 21, 1928 – June 13, 2022

Mom was born in Oxbow, Sask., the second youngest of eight kids. She married Romeo “Ron” Fontaine in 1953 and had two daughters, Debbie and Shelley. In 1972, the family moved to Calgary where the Stampede became a fun part of mom’s life. She always dressed up with a cowboy hat and high heels and loved to dance downtown with her sister Rosina.
Mom was great at telling stories about her family and all the crazy things that happened when eight kids lived in a little house. Rosina and mom would grab their little brother Wally by the legs and drag him around so the floor would get polished. The sisters were forever pushing furniture out of the way so they could have dances with their brothers (whether they wanted to or not)! Grandma raised turkeys that were bigger than mom and they were forever chasing her into the outhouse where she would have to yell for someone to rescue her. So many summers spent at Kenosee Lake, visits to her sister Doris in Winnipeg and wild card games at Bob and Helen’s. Mom loved to dance and to sing, tell crazy scary stories and give smoochy kisses to her grandbabies and her great-grandbabies. Everything revolved around family, fun, music and togetherness. We will always remember how mom would put us to bed with a song and a dance and a few leg kicks as she danced her way out of the room.
She was a strong, loving woman who taught us to be strong and to never give up. Even at the end, when she was very weak she would always say “I love you darling.”
We love you too, Mom. You will always be in our hearts.
Mom’s memorial service was held at St. Matthew Catholic Church on June 20, 2022.
A grand old Irish Wake will be held at Shelley and Darcy’s next July long weekend. Mom loved music, dancing and lots of laughter — so that’s what she will get!
For those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Val’s name, donations maybe made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta.
