Local athletes compete at 2020 Alberta Winter Games

Five young athletes from Rocky Mountain House took part in the 2020 Alberta Winter Games in Airdrie over the weekend, and two brought home the hardware.

In curling, Team Wright in Zone 5, skipped by Wyatt Wright of Rocky Mountain House, took silver at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games. The team lost the gold medal game in an extra end during Monday’s finals at the Town and Country Curling Club in Airdrie, against the Zone 3 team with players from Calgary and Okotoks.

Blaine Steffan of Rocky Mountain House played second for Team Van Amsterdam, also from Zone 5. The team finished in seventh place overall.

Three local speed skaters joined the Zone 4 team, along with ten speed skaters from Red Deer. The long track speed skating events were held at the Olympic Oval in Calgary on Feb. 15 and 16. Eden Ponto and Genevieve Barnett competed in the T2T 1 (age 11-12) Female event. In the individual event, Eden finish in 16th place and Ginny finished in 19th place in a field of 24 competitors.

Dennise In competed in the T2T 1 (age 11-12) Male event. For individual standings, Dennise finished 14th in a field of 24 skaters, and his team from Zone 4 won bronze in the five-lap pursuit race.
