Paddlers off to Alberta Summer Games
By Laura Button

Eight young paddlers from Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County will travel to Grande Prairie later this month to compete at the Alberta Summer Games.
Raylee Davis, Michael Edwards, Rayce Schroderus, Emma Aasman, Ava Aasman, James Muyers, Callie Corriveau and Kiersten Kohut will all compete for Zone 5.
“The reason we are representing Zone 5 instead of Zone 4 is they wanted to keep our entire awesome group together,” said Rocky Canoe Club president Angie Schroderus. “Zone 5 had no athletes participating so we basically took over the zone.”
The Zone 4 roster will be filled with paddlers from Innisfail and Olds.
Securing a berth to the games was one of the goals of the Kayak Youth Development (KYD) program, the club’s first-ever winter training program for kids to learn different aspects of kayaking.
In Grande Prairie, the team will compete in three disciplines: slalom, polo and a downriver race. The games take place July 19 to 22, but the Zone 5 team of paddlers will travel to Grande Prairie ahead of time to take part in one last training camp.
