  • Rocky Bantam A Raiders won the A side of the Rocky Doran Stewart Memorial Hockey Tournament. The Rocky B Chiefs won the B side consolation final.
  • Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards won a Skeleton Race in Konigssee, Germany, to reclaim the yellow jersey for the World Cup season.
  • Janice Lea of Wilderness Village Trail Rides was award the 2006 Humanity Award by the Standardbred Retirement Foundation.
  • Conservatives Blaine Calkins, Rob Merrifield and Myron Thompson won their respective area ridings in the January 22 federal election.
  • The Mountaineer welcomed new reporter Stephanie Douglas.

  • Speedskater Travis Wymenga competed at the North American Age Class Long Track Speed Skating competition in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • Rocky Credit Union donated a total of $1250 to five area schools.
  • The Rocky Farmers’ and Farmerettes’ bonspiels were successful.
  • Red Deer RCMP “K” Division Drug Section’s “Project: Keepstraight” made a stop in Rocky with guest speaker Brennan Chapman, a Red Deer Rebels hockey team defenceman, speaking to Gr. 7 students from St. Matthew, Pioneer and Rocky Christian Schools.
  • Twelve teams participated in the Rocky Girls’ hockey tournament.
  • Kandi Wyatt won her 17th consecutive boxing match.
  • Rocky junior curlers hosted a 13-team bonspiel.
  • Am-Con Industrial Services Ltd. was severely damaged by fire. A second fire two days later destroyed what was left.
  • The Will Sinclair High School building was torn down to make way for new development.
  • Mellisa Hollingsworth-Richards won bronze in skeleton racing at the Olympics.
  • Four young people died in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 11, 23 kilometres east of Rocky.
  • At the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet, Barb Richardson received the 2005 Lou Soppit Community Builder of the Year award; Tom and Carol Turner, Community Service Award; Marvin Peterson, Humanitarian Award; Cayley Moffat and Louise Weillard, Junior Achievement Award; Sobeys, Corporate Service Award; The Walking Eagle Inn, Hospitality Award.

  • The Rocky Knights U-12 soccer team won their division of the Ice Breaker Tournament at Sylvan Lake.
  • Rocky’s R.L. Zengel, V.C., Branch No. 8 of the Royal Canadian Legion celebrated 80 years of service.
  • The Chamber of Commerce’s annual Trade Fair had over 4100 visitors.
  • The Rocky Rotary Club hosted a group of Brazilian exchange students.
  • Justin Krabben was drafted by the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League in the bantam draft.
  • Bryce Burndred was one of 20 skaters from across Canada to take part in the CFSA National Youth Camp.
  • Keyera Strachan Gas Plant donated $500 to the West Central High School rugby teams to help defray the cost of new uniforms.
  • A forest fire north of Burnstick Lake raged out of control for several days.
  • The Town of Rocky donated $25,000 to the Rocky Stampede Board to help with construction costs for the new rodeo grounds.
  • The O’Chiese Reserve held an eight-team baseball tournament to honour mothers and grandmothers.
  • Kiska Waptan Bighorn held their ninth annual Diabetes Awareness Walk.
  • The Junior Divisional Badminton Tournament was held at Pioneer School with students from 10 different schools participating.
  • The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps 198 Yukon held their promotion night.
  • The Big Horn Rodeo in Caroline enjoyed good weather and good attendance.
  • The North Saskatchewan River was designated a Canadian Heritage River.
  • Nachelle Wadams earned a full scholarship to Mount Royal College.
  • Kyla Eiffert was the first person called to the bar in Rocky Mountain House.
  • Joyce Brown was named the museum’s Volunteer of the Year.
  • West Central High School hosted the Alberta Association of Student Councils and Advisors for the 17th annual StudentLeadership Conference.
  • Sarah Carpentier of West Central High School earned a Scholastic Distinction Scholarship from the University of Alberta.
  • The Mountaineer welcomed reporter Kristin Odland and summer reporter Andrew Herman to the staff.
  • Cops for Cancer raised over $17,500 by shaving their heads.
  • The RMH Pentecostal Assembly gathered for a mortgage-burning celebration.
  • The 4-H Achievement Day Show and Sale was a success. Kaitlan Titford raised the grand champion steer and Luke Titford raised the reserve champion.
  • The Village of Caroline appointed Michael Haugen as new CAO.

  • The second annual Rupert’s Land Fur Trader Banquet attracted almost 100 people.
  • Rocky’s Rodeo was a huge success in its first year at the North Saskatchewan River Park facility.
  • The new school promised by the federal government at the Bighorn Reserve was postponed.
  • Rocky’s Royal Canadian Sea Cadets won the trophy for best Corps at a sports weekend in Wainwright.
  • The Rocky Canoe Club hosted the fifth annual Brierleys Whitewater Classic for over 20 paddlers from throughout Alberta.
  • The Red Dogs men’s baseball team won a tournament in Beiseker.
  • Lochearn School, together with the aboriginal community, marked Aboriginal Day.
  • Kimberly St. Pierre was named Service Canada Centre for Youth Employment Officer for Rocky.
  • Harvey Vankoughnet was named Lion of the Year for the third time.
  • The 256 golfers competing in the Rocky Oilmen’s Golf Tournament enjoyed a great weekend.
  • West Central High School hosted their first annual athletics awards night to honour many high school athletes.
  • Nine-year-old Kacey Klaassen shaved her head to raise over $1600 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
  • Rev. Dr. Chris Nojonen received her Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in California.
  • Rocky Barracudas honoured their swimmers at Awards Night.
  • Jesse Butler returned from a five-month mission trip to China.

  • A lightning strike was believed to have started a forest fire near Nordegg.
  • West Central High School celebrated its first graduating class. Sarah Carpentier was valedictorian.
  • St. Dominic High school celebrated their first graduating class. Ryan Donald gave the valedictory address.
  • Caroline School honoured their grads with Sonja Nome giving the valedictorian’s speech.
  • David Thompson High School held graduation exercises. Robin Steudel was valedictorian.
  • The Thompson Country Horse Trials were a great success.
  • Twenty-two cyclists took part in the Double Baseline Enduro Race, won by Rod Dagneau.
  • Three West Central High School rugby players, Dan Kozak, Thomas Naughton and Logan Mosinsky were named to the Zone 4 Alberta Summer Games team.
  • Brigade Days were held at the RMH National Historic Site.
  • Many local businesses teamed with ConocoPhillips to present the first annual Safety Day, attended by about 200 people.
  • The Town Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services moved into their new office in the old Opportunity Corps building.
  • Local boxer Kandi Wyatt and her coach Mike Smith landed roles in the upcoming movie “Resurrecting the Champ,” filming in Calgary.
  • The Rocky Bantam AA Diamondbacks baseball team won silver at provincials.
  • Evan and Tyson Frencheater played soccer for Team Alberta at the North American Indigenous Games in Denver, Colorado.
  • Rocky Red Dogs baseball team was league champions.
  • Loyal Ma travelled to Brazil to coach and officiate at the BMX World Championships.
  • The Husky Spring Golf Tournament raised over $24,000 for various local charities.

AUGUST

  • Carissa Alexander won four medals in swimming at the Alberta Summer Games held in Red Deer.
  • Cheyenne Bigchild won four medals at the North American Indigenous Games in Denver, Colorado.
  • Curtis Levinsky was named to the U18 Alberta Rugby Team.
  • Huge crowds attended Antique Days, hosted by the Central Alberta Antique and Model Club at Leslieville.
  • Phil Fontaine, Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, visited the Sunchild Powwow.
  • The 16th annual Fat Tire Festival, hosted by Frontier Lodge, attracted approximately 70 mountain bikers.
  • A hailstorm backed by 100 km/h winds caused damage in an area from Caroline to Spruce View.
  • The best-ever Lions Demolition Derby saw 54 competitors take part in front of over 1600 spectators
  • Emma and Wyanne Smallboy brought home medals in Tae Kwon Do from the North American Indigenous Games in Denver, Colorado.
  • Sarah Carpentier returned home from the 12-day 2006 Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. and New York City.
  • Kandi Wyatt traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, where she won a gold medal and belt in the 2006 Ringside Boxing Tournament.
  • The Rocky Air Show, featuring the Snowbirds and the Canadian Forces SkyHawks Parachute Team, attracted about 7000 paying customers.
  • Shania Ross shaved her head for cancer and raised $1100.
  • The 30th annual David Thompson Days enjoyed great weather for their events.
  • Rocky Youth in Action’s Journey to Africa raised about $16,000 to build a school in Kenya.
  • Golfers at the James Bradley Tubbs Memorial Golf Tournament raised $38,000.
  • Royal Richardson, Heidi Northcott and Kandi Wyatt were part of the gold medal-winning Team Alberta at the 2006 Bantam Girls Baseball Championship.
  • Snowmobile and ATV club members from the Olds, Caroline and Bighorn Clubs repaired Bighorn Trails.

SEPTEMBER

  • Rocky Whirlaways Square Dance Club and the Central Alberta Square Dance hosted over 450 dancers for the 30th Annual Alberta Square and Round Dance Federation Convention.
  • Three hikers were rescued after going missing from a trail in the Landslide Lake area.
  • Rocky Credit Union donated $1000 and $300 of school supplies to Tools for Schools.
  • Boston Pizza raised $3015 for the hospital’s portable incubator project through their golf tournament.
  • Husky Oil donated $1200 to various local organizations.
  • Colton Craner won the Pine Hills Junior Club Championship for the second time in four years.
  • Katie Songer was the only Albertan to win one of five scholarships from the Canadian Western Agribition.
  • The Keyera Strachan Gas Plant celebrated its 35th anniversary.
  • COPE Group Home Three officially opened its doors.
  • Rocky Legion began selling red T-shirts to support Canadian troops abroad.
  • The Community Terry Fox Run was held under cloudy skies.

  • Former Mountaineer publisher Lawrence Mazza passed away.
  • Rocky native Richard Devlieger was appointed Coxswain of HMCS Regina.
  • Sarah Carpentier was awarded the Governor General’s medal at West Central High School’s first awards night.
  • Nachelle Wadams earned the Principal’s Award at WCHS’s awards night.
  • Husky donated a total of $1200 to various local organizations
  • St. Matthew Catholic School held their annual awards night.
  • Luke Craner was named to the RDC Golf Team.
  • Distinguished Volunteer Service Awards were presented to firefighters Bob Aasman, Archie Richardson, Glen Holmes and Barrie Bouwman.
  • The Mayor’s Special Award was presented to Kevin Stalker for his work with Cops for Cancer and for completing the Canadian Iron man Triathelon.
  • St. Matthew School raised over $13,700 for the Terry Fox Run.
  • Western Wheels donated $2000 to various local organizations.
  • Rocky’s Alex Watson placed third in the 2006 Canadian Forces Mountain Man Challenge.
  • RCLC hosted the 16th annual Wellness Conference with the theme “Alive and Kicking.”
  • Ryan Fink finished third overall on the rodeo circuit for saddle bronc.
  • Dwight Oliver returned as Reeve of Clearwater County, Chuck Shipley remained Deputy Reeve.
