  • The Rocky Barnstormers RC Club held their annual New Year’s Day meet.
  • Local pilot Barrie Bouwman and a passenger were uninjured after an emergency landing in a field by the Arbutus Road when the plane’s engine quit.
  • Food Bank director Dan Gonzales reported that 299 hampers were given out at Christmas time.
  • The provincial Property Rights Task Force made a stop in Rocky at an open house to gather comments and concerns from area residents.
  • The Bouchard rink of Brad and Shawna Bouchard and Carrie and Darrel Stewart won the Town and Country Bonspiel.
  • The Caroline Cougars girls basketball team won every game in the tournament they hosted.
  • Wild Rose Public Schools opened an aboriginal resource centre with Louise Russell as the community resource worker.
  • Reporter Chelsea Grainger began work at The Mountaineer.
  • Town Council heard that building permits in 2011 were the lowest in a decade.
  • Ty Lund won the Progressive Conservative nomination for the provincial Rocky-Sundre constituency over his challenger, Jimmy Clark.
  • A youth program called The Rock at Living Branches Church was popular with kids ages 11-17.
  • Dean Schweder of the Town of Rocky announced the opening of a new Rural Business Centre to assist local entrepreneurs and small business owners. Michelle Andrishak was appointed as the Small Business Advisor.
  • Oopsie Daisy the Clown (Kerry Ringness) spent some time clowning around at a drama studies class at West Central High School.
  • A local man faced multiple charges including possession of stolen property, fraudulent concealment and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking after RCMP raided a farmhouse north of Rocky.
  • Confluence Campus was internationally recognized by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development for having an exemplary educational facility.
  • A group of West Central High School students raised $1186 for famine relief in Africa.
  • A community meeting held to gauge support for the construction of a YMCA facility in Rocky drew 100 interested participants.

  • Clearwater County agreed to contribute funding towards a feasibility study regarding a centre for the arts in Rocky. The process was spearheaded by the Northern Crossing drama group.
  • The Rocky Credit Union rink of Bonnie Titford, Nancy Boorman, Brande Harder and Caroline Varty won the 25th Farmerettes Bonspiel.
  • The Farmers Bonspiel was won by the Sieppert, Draginda and Company rink of Ron Matchett, Sandi MacGillivray, John Matchett and John Sieppert.
  • Statistics Canada numbers from the 2011 census showed a population growth rate of only 0.86 per cent for the town of Rocky.
  • Rocky Search and Rescue members were called to locate two injured people by Allstones Lake, west of Nordegg. Due to the remote location, darkness descended before the hikers could be brought out, so SAR members stayed with them all night. The hikers were removed by helicopter the next morning.
  • RCMP charged a local man after a complex grow operation was discovered in the Cow Lake area.
  • Rocky town council approved terms of reference for a committee formed to advocate for the construction of a new hospital.
  • Rocky Rams hockey team coach Tyler Munday was named Coach of the Year by the North Central Hockey League.
  • Kate Bertagnolli of the Rocky Speed Skating Club won a gold medal at the Alberta Winter Games, held in Spruce Grove. The speed skating relay team won a bronze medal.
  • A Family Fest was held at the National Historic Site. Participants enjoyed a pipe and drum presentation, horse-drawn sleigh rides and a hockey game played by Victorian rules, among many other activities.
  • The new Aboriginal Resource Centre held an open house to showcase the start of the program for aboriginal students.
  • The Rocky Clearwater Caroline Physician Recruitment and Retention Society hosted 55 University of Alberta medical students in an effort to expose them to rural medicine.
  • A successful Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter Romance ’N Roses event raised $40,000 for the shelter.
  • Vandals broke into the office and residence at the Cow Lake Campground and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
  • The West Central Rebels boys and girls basketball teams raised over $3,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
  • Over 200 people took part in the Cow Lake Fishing Derby on Family Day. Karen Cross won the trophy for the biggest catch, a 690 gram perch.
  • Rocky Christian School Society voted against joining Wild Rose Public Schools as an alternative program in the division.
  • Clearwater County Highway Patrol reported that they issued 2,136 tickets in 2011.
  • Tyler Munday and Daral Northcott of the Rocky Rams hockey team were named to the North Central Alberta Hockey League’s all-star team.
  • Eight recycling units were set up in Caroline courtesy of the Caroline Bottle Depot, the Village of Caroline and Recycling Alberta.
  • New street signs were acquired for Caroline.
  • Rocky resident Carolyn Kent was nominated by the Town to receive the Paul Yuzyk Multiculturalism Award for her extensive volunteer work in Rocky.
  • Remains found north and west of Rocky in January were identified as those of Danny Baich, who had been reported missing in June 2011.
  • The application for the proposed Meadow Ponds Estates subdivision south of Rocky was approved by Clearwater County despite vehement opposition from opponents.
  • The proposed location of a Clearwater County sewage lagoon in the Ferrier-Garth area was opposed by a large group of area residents at a public meeting.

  • The McLeod rink of Loree McLeod, Melissa Erickson, Lindsay Nicolay and Cherene King won the Ladies Open Bonspiel at the Rocky curling rink.
  • Chad Lozo, Bryon Anger, Dustin Black, Cole Thacker and Robert Morgan were big game trophy winners at the Rocky Fish & Game Association annual banquet.
  • Rocky’s Fire Chief Archie Richardson resigned after 29 years as a volunteer firefighter.
  • Sara Maetche began duties as County reporter for The Mountaineer.
  • At the annual Rocky Chamber of Commerce banquet, David and Darlene MacDonald of Outwest Camping & RV were awarded the Chamber’s Hospitality Award.

The Rocky Flying Club/COPA Flight 166 received the Mayor’s Award for Distinguished Voluntary Service. Maurice Galli received the Voluntary Service Award for his work with the Rocky Air Show. Kate Bertagnolli received the Mayor’s Award for Athletics. Muriel Stevenson was given the Mayor’s Award for Athletics in coaching.
  • Desiree Iceton was presented with the Mayor’s Award for Youth and the Mayor’s Award for Fine and Performing Arts went to Alita Hermary of Northern Crossing. Jeff and Juli Gillies received the Martha Kostuch Memorial Award.
  • Fire Chief Archie Richardson was honoured with the Mayor’s Recognition Special Award for his years of service with the Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Teams of the Rocky Minor Hockey League sported new jerseys.
  • The Rocky Royals Midget Hockey Team hosted the provincial championships, advancing to the semi-finals in the tournament.
  • A man died after the vehicle he was riding in was hit when a driver made a left-hand turn at the intersection of Hwy. 11 and 50 Ave.
  • Lois Lightfoot of Rocky won $100,000 on a Super Crossword Lottery ticket.
  • The pony chuckwagon tarp auction held by the Rocky Stampede Board raised over $16,000 for the annual pro rodeo.
  • Premier Alison Redford called a provincial election for April 23.
  • Rocky Christian School voted to join Wild Rose Public Schools as an alternative program for the next school year.
  • Vance Curtis, coach of the West Central High School Rebels football team, was named Football Alberta’s Tier IV high school coach of the year.
  • Randy Ponich and his rink won the national senior curling championship in Abbotsford, BC.

  • The Neway rink of Rob Armitage, Darwin Fuller, Phil Haarstad and Steve Fowler won the annual Oilmen’s Bonspiel.
  • Amy Boyd of Rocky took first place in the Women’s F-500 class of the Canadian Ice Racing Championships at Beausejour, Manitoba.
  • The Rocky Medical Clinic announced that it would begin extended clinic hours two evenings a week.
  • A settlement was reached in the dispute between former Wild Rose Public Schools superintendent Bev Hammond and the board of trustees.
  • Rod and Laureen Hall lost their house in a fire northwest of Rocky.
  • Tyler Leeder, who was wanted on Canada-wide warrants for parole violations and armed robbery, was apprehended at a Rocky motel.
  • The Rocky Curling Club windup bonspiel was won by Donna Zubot, Wayne Wyatt and Judy and Ernie Rodermond.
  • A tarp auction for the “Battle of the Rockies” chuckwagon races to be held in Rocky in August raised over $230,000.
  • The “Push to Open Nature” group, dedicated to helping those with disabilities enjoy the outdoors, held an information meeting.
  • West Central High School and Pioneer School band members and chaperones returned home from a trip to London, England in celebration of the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
  • Linda Tomlinson presented a petition to MP Blaine Calkins calling for stiffer penalties for unsafe left-hand turns that result in serious injury or fatality. Tomlinson’s husband Bill was the victim of one such event in 2010.
  • Provincial election candidates: Ty Lund, PC; Joe Anglin, Wildrose Alliance; Doreen Broska, NDP; Mason Sisson, Liberal.
  • A large crowd at the Caroline Legion Branch No. 177 commemorated the WW I Battle of Vimy Ridge.
  • Joe Anglin of the Wildrose Alliance Party was elected as MLA for Rocky-Rimbey-Sundre in the provincial election, receiving 51.4 per cent of the vote compared to incumbent Ty Lund, who had 41.1 per cent.
  • A firearm threat at Caroline School led to a lockdown there. No one was injured in the incident.
  • Canadian Metis author, storyteller and literacy advocate David Bouchard visited Lochearn School.
  • The Mountaineer was awarded Best Overall Newspaper in Canada in its circulation class at Newspaper Canada’s annual conference in Toronto.

  • The Rocky Public Library won a Municipal Affairs Award for Excellence for its Preserving Local History Project, which highlighted the role of David Thompson and the fur trade.
  • Elin Thora Jensdottir joined The Mountaineer staff as a summer intern.
  • MLA Joe Anglin was named to the Wildrose Alliance provincial opposition party’s shadow cabinet with responsibilities for Environment and Water and Utilities.
  • Parks Canada announced that due to budget cuts hours and services will be “realized” at the Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site.
  • Over 180 musicians in the Wild Rose Public Schools band program entered various categories at the Kiwanis Festival in Red Deer, with many winning scholarships and outstanding ratings and awards.
  • An arsonist caused $10,000 worth of damage at the Rocky Pro Rodeo grounds at North Saskatchewan River Park.
  • Next to New volunteers donated $60,000 to various local groups.
  • The Rotary Lobsterfest entertained a sold-out crowd.
  • A man from Wetaskiwin died when his quad hit a solid barrier on the May long weekend.
  • A symposium put on by Communities Celebrating Life was held in Rocky to address the issue of suicide in the community.
  • Sunchild First Nation celebrated Treaty Day, commemorating the day in 1944 when the Sunchild First Nation was created.
  • The Sunchild Health Centre celebrated 10 years in their new health building.
  • Vandals caused $15,000 worth of damage to facilities at Cow Lake Campground.

  • Kaylee Biggart was valedictorian at Caroline School’s graduation ceremonies.
  • Northern Crossing formed a committee to assess the feasibility of establishing an arts centre in Rocky. A survey was sent to residents as the first step in the process.
  • Local girls Arielle Land and Jovita Byzitter won the opportunity to work as interns at the Calgary Stampede.
  • Joe Baker, Director of West Country and Planning and Development for Clearwater County, retired.
  • Red Arrow Connector, a bus passenger service, announced it was starting regular daily service between Rocky and Red Deer.
  • The Caroline Church of the Nazarene youth group raised over $4,000 for a children’s playground at the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter.
  • Jerry Pratt was returned to the president’s chair at the Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting. Val Clement was named vice-president; president-elect Patrick Dannis; treasurer Al Bergsma, directors Marion Kostynuk, Shirley Sellars, Brian Williamson, Dielle Fedema, Colleen Dwyer, Nola Morgan, Laurie Fitchett and Anil Walji.
  • County and Town councils expressed concern over delays in ambulance service since Alberta Health Services took over responsibility for ambulances.
  • Rugby players Sonja Simmelink, Karina Stevenson and Cassidy Hollingsworth were named to the Zone 4 team for the Alberta Summer Games. Mike Haugen was coach of the team.
  • Country artist Gord Bamford was at Lochearn Elementary School with a donation from his charitable foundation to the school’s guitar club.
  • The Lord’s Food Bank director Dan Gonzales said that the service was in critical condition, with empty shelves due to high demand.
  • Clearwater County reallocated funds to begin work on the proposed Rocky-Nordegg trail.
  • An appreciation party was held in Leslieville in honour of former long-time MLA Ty Lund.
  • Local author Justin Jones held a book signing for his first published book, “Reath.”
  • Brad Stuart of the NHL signed a deal with the San Jose Sharks.
  • West Central High School athletics director Tony van Son was retiring after 33 years in Rocky schools. Van Son cycled to work every day of those 33 years.
  • Local author Charles Teddy Bourn published his book “What I Want My Kids to Know.”
  • Emily Lonsdale gave the valedictory address at St. Dominic High School graduation ceremonies.
  • Jared Neville was valedictorian at West Central High School graduation.

  • The new Nordegg Public Services Building, accommodating Clearwater Fire Rescue Services, Emergency Services and Public Works, was officially opened.
  • Area cowboys Jim Berry, Rowdy Hays and Keith Beaverbones competed at the Calgary Stampede.
  • Charges were laid in relation to recent fires at Crimson and Cow Lakes.
  • Caroline School was chosen by the Government of Alberta to receive the Healthy Schools Community award for embracing a variety of healthy living initiatives.
  • Kaelan Parr was valedictorian at David Thompson High School graduation ceremonies.
  • The Push to Open Nature Society held the Foothills Adaptive Challenge at Crimson Lake, to assist people with mental and physical disabilities and mobility issues to get close to nature.
  • Mark Chevallier, a local businessman, died in a plane crash near the Rocky airport.
  • Reporter Laura Kluz began work at The Mountaineer, covering Town Council and court news.
  • The second annual Calling All Drums Powwow hosted competitors at the National Historic Site with about 4300 people in attendance.
  • Sports reporter Kirk Verner joined The Mountaineer staff.
  • Former Rocky resident Joan Deitchman (Grant) was the first Canadian woman to take part in and finish the Race Across America bicycle race from Oceanside, California to Annapolis, Maryland. She raised $13,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
  • Fanie Van Heerden, rugby coach for 12 years, said he and his family are planning to leave Rocky.
  • Town Council decided that members of the community who have spent time on Town boards and council will have their service commemorated with a tree planted in their honour.
  • The Primary Care Network began raising funds in order to expand their services into a larger space.
  • Management and employees of the Rocky Co-op held a benefit for co-worker Cody Webster who was battling cancer.
  • The Alberta Frontier Shooters was moving its structures off the land leased from the province by the Rocky Rod and Gun Club, as a result of a dispute between the two groups.
  • Rugby player Sonja Simmelink was off to Sherbrooke, Quebec with Team Alberta to play in the nationals.
  • Rocky native Nick Tarnasky was signed to play with the Buffalo Sabres of the NHL, after two years playing out of the league.

  • HBC announced that the Rocky Zeller’s Select store will close by March 2013.
  • Peace officers were kept busy on the long weekend with ATV and alcohol issues.
  • A report commissioned by Clearwater County commented that Leslieville shows the greatest potential for development in the county.
  • Newly elected MLA Joe Anglin explained why the constituency office in Rocky closed. He opened an office in Sundre for accessibility reasons.
  • Environment and Sustainable Resource Development reported that the mountain pine beetle numbers in the area are “pretty low.”
  • A Rocky woman died in a motorcycle crash on Hwy. 11 west of town.
  • Local car collectors Judy and Terry McCaw were visited by Dennis Gage of the TV show “My Classic Car” and will be featured on the program.
  • Jason Glass won the World Chuckwagon Championship title at the Battle of the Rockies held at North Saskatchewan River Park.
  • Over 250 racers took part in the Brian Mazza Memorial Trail Run at Crimson Lake. Cornelius Heystek and Susanna Heystek were male and female winners of the 3k run; Martin Jancus and Lucius Jancusova won the 10k run; Virgil Vaneaton and Abbey
  • Peterson won the first-time 20k run.
  • U18 Team Alberta won the gold medal at the national rugby finals in Sherbrooke, Quebec, with local player Sonja Simmelink part of the team.
  • Over 350 people attended a Rocky High School Reunion celebrating students from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.
  • St. Matthew Catholic Parish welcomed a new priest, Fr. Christian Nwaigwe.
  • Team Canada, which included pitcher Heidi Northcott of Rocky, took the bronze medal at the ABAF Baseball Women’s World Cup held in Edmonton.
  • Wayde Hodgen of Rocky was part of the U18 rugby Team Alberta that won silver at the national competition in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

  • Town Council deemed the summer weekly Marketplace on Main an unqualified success.
  • Both the Town and County brought the issue of slow Emergency Response Times to Alberta Health Services, and were assured that steps had been taken to address the problem.
  • Town Council presented a plaque to Loyal Ma, honouring his participation in the London Olympics.
  • McMan Youth, Family and Community Services held a breakfast to raise awareness of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
  • The Sunchild Bisons football team from Sunchild First Nation began their season as Canada’s first and only First Nations high school football team.
  • The Caroline Museum celebrated their 25th anniversary.
  • Rocky’s first Walk a Mile in her Shoes event, organized by the Mountain Rose Women’s Shelter, raised over $8,000 from pledges collected by men who walked a mile wearing women’s shoes.
  • Former Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed passed away at the age of 84.
  • Wild Rose Public Schools superintendent Brian Celli accepted a three-year extension to his contract.
  • Rocky Victim Services Unit raised more than $20,000 at their golf fundraiser at Pine Hills Golf Club, an all-time record for the group.
  • Ryan Anderson began duties as vice-principal at West Central High School.
    St. Dominic welcomed the new administration team of Principal Patrick Hughes and Assistant Principal Micheal Cellini.
  • A fundraiser hosted by Secure Energy at Pine Hills Golf Club raised $30,000 for the Alberta Children’s Hospital.
  • Renovations including paving at Big Rock were halted by the Town after residents expressed concerns about the project.
  • The federal Election Boundaries Commission held hearings in Red Deer regarding possible boundary changes that would affect Rocky, Caroline and Clearwater County.
  • MP Blaine Calkins said that although services at the RMH National Historic Site would be cut during the “shoulder season,” the site would not be eliminating their interpretive program as had been previously stated.
  • Diamond 5 at Rocky’s Recreation Ball Park was renamed the Harold Northcott Diamond in honour of the long-time baseball coach, who was leaving the community.
  • The Rocky Mountain House Healthcare Donation Committee announced that the annual fundraising gala was in hiatus but that they were continuing to raise funds for a track-lift system at the hospital for moving patients with mobility issues.
  • It was the 45th anniversary of the purchase of The Mountaineer by Lawrence and Mildred Mazza.
  • Therese Kleeberger was welcomed as the new Village of Caroline manager.
  • Plans to expand Caroline’s Kurt Browning Complex were cancelled after tender prices for the project came in at double the original estimate.
